Citizenship and Naturalization

The law firm of Deborah L. Karapetian assists individuals with applying for Citizenship and Naturalization. While we are located in the Glendale area, we serve immigrants throughout Los Angeles, Southern California, and the United States.

Naturalization
Naturalization is the process in which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon a foreign citizen or national after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The general requirements for administrative naturalization include:

  • A period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States;
  • Residence prior to filing;
  • An ability to read, write, and speak English;
  • A knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government;
  • Good moral character;
  • Attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution; and,
  • Favorable disposition toward the United States.

U.S. Citizenship
A person is considered a citizen of the U.S. automatically by birth in the United States, birth abroad to a United States citizen or national, or upon the naturalization of the custodial parent(s) prior to a legal permanent resident's eighteenth birthday.

Alternatively, a permanent resident may apply to naturalize 90 days prior to the fifth year anniversary of status (three in the case of a person married to a United States citizen). The applicant must prove good moral character for the statutory period, English proficiency, pass a basic civics exam, and demonstrate attachment to the principles of the Constitution.

Because of age, length of residency, disability or other health-related reason, certain applicants may avoid the English proficiency element and/or the civics exam. Persons with prior criminal history or a history of immigration violation or fraud should always contact an attorney prior to filing for naturalization to avoid the potential for denial and placement in Removal Proceedings
